In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at the Helsinki Photo Festival, Paul Van Slambrouck, Ximena Natera, the Comet Neowise, Drew Gardner, Howard Schickler's collection, Thom Hogan, saving on ink and buying cameras in pairs.
- The theme of the Helsinki Photo Festival is "trust." Open until Sept. 30, the festival presents the work of 58 international photographers displayed in venues across the city.
- In Fog Bound or Toward a Vanishing Horizon, Paul Van Slambrouck explains his fascinating with shooting in the fog. "I see things I used to pass by and in the process have come to feel more settled about what I suspect I will never see with clarity," he writes.
- These Photos of Kids Protesting Systemic Racism Will Give You Hope for the Future showcases portraits by Brooklyn-based photographer Ximena Natera.
- David Williams explains how to capture images of The Comet Neowise this month. "This comet has been getting brighter and brighter in the early-morning sky and, in the coming days, it will make an appearance in the evening after sunset," he writes. He recommends an exposure between 5 and 10 seconds.
- Grace Ebert presents a nice collection of Drew Gardner's modern recreations of Portraits of Historically Significant Figures from his project The Descendants.
- In USGA Golf Museum Acquires Treasure Trove of Vintage Golf Photography, Mike Dojc reports the organization has acquired Howard Schickler's collection of over 1,000 exhibition quality photos from the 1850s to the start of the second world war.
- Thom Hogan lists What's Wrong With the R's?. At least in the minds of "potential customers."
- Derrick Story is Saving Big on Printer Ink With Starink Cartridges for his all-in-one printer. But he's sticking to Canon ink for his high-end 13-inch printer.
- Kirk Tuck explains why he likes to Buy Cameras in Pairs. The film era scarred him, with two out of three Hasselblads locking up one hot Texas day and a Leica failing to get through his first roll of film in Paris. But really it's the insurance of having a backup that's the attraction.
More to come! Meanwhile, here's a look back. And please support our efforts...
