Leica Introduces SL2-S Mirrorless Hybrid Camera

Leica has announced the SL2-S, a full-frame mirrorless camera with impressive specs aimed at both the photo and video worlds.

NEW YORK -- Leica has announced the Leica SL2-S, a full-frame mirrorless L-mount camera with a distinct hybrid ethos. Designed to appeal equally to photo and video users, the SL2-S borrows the form factor of the high-res SL2 camera and features a new sensor design and updated processing capabilities for a more well-rounded workflow.

Key Features

  • 24.6-Mp Full-Frame BSI CMOS Sensor
  • Maestro III Image Processor
  • DCI 4K Video; HLG & 10-Bit Recording
  • ISO 100-100000, Up to 25 fps Shooting
  • 5.76m-Dot 0.78x-Mag. EyeRes OLED EVF
  • 3.2" 2.1m-Dot Touchscreen LCD
  • Contrast-Detect 225-Area AF System
  • 5-Axis Sensor-Shift Image Stabilization
  • 96-Mp Multishot, Dual SD UHS-II Slots

Revolving around a full-frame 24.6-Mp BSI CMOS sensor and updated Maestro III image processor, the SL2-S offers clean image quality with reduced noise while maintaining trademark color rendering throughout its broad ISO 100-100000 range. The Maestro III pairs with a large 4-GB buffer to permit nearly limitless consecutive shooting at up to 25 fps with an electronic shutter or 9 fps with a mechanical shutter, with either DNG or JPEG file types.

Equally benefiting video performance, the sensor and processor enable UHD and DCI 4K recording with frame rates up to 60p possible. Internal 10-bit 4:2:2 recording is available at up to 30p and a full-size HDMI port yields 10-bit output at all frame rates. Also, there is HLG support for instant HDR-ready footage and the L-Log gamma can be used for advanced color grading applications during post.

Complementing the dual feature sets is a split menu structure that distinctly caters to both recording methods, with separate systems for photo and video settings. Additionally, the Leica SL2-S will be fully supported by Capture One 21 and Adobe Photoshop Lightroom for tethering and Raw file editing.

In terms of its physical design, the SL2-S features an all-metal housing, built from aluminum and magnesium, that is durable and contributes to heat dissipation to support longer recording times. Also, it is IP54-rated for dust and moisture resistance. As a sibling to the original SL2, this new camera is compatible with the same optional accessories, including the battery and handgrip and sports the same handling and viewing assets, including the 5.76m-dot EyeRes EVF, 3.2" 2.1m-dot touchscreen LCD, dual UHS-II SD card slots, wireless connectivity and top status LCD. It also has 5-axis in-body image stabilization and has Multishot Mode for creating composited 96-Mp stills.

In addition to the camera announcement, Leica has also announced a forthcoming firmware update for the SL2-S, which is set to come during the first half of 2021. This major update will bring a wealth of video features, including internal 10-bit recording at 4K 60/50p, Long-GOP recording for reduced bit rates and other supporting features, as well as improved Eye/Face/Head/Body Detection for faster AF performance and refined subject tracking.
