In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at LensCulture monochrome awards, masked horses, moon shine, Zach Cooley, Northern Lights, Remini, a stocking stuffer, another stocking stuffer, Excire Foto deal, Rocky Nook deal and Adorama one-day sale.

  • Winners of the 2020 LensCulture Black & White Awards have been announced. "The work you will discover here includes an astonishing range of artistic approaches, too, from hybrid mixes of documentary and fiction, to reportage, self-portraits, philosophical meditations, street photography, studio work and appreciation of everyday natural beauty," the editors write.
  • Wildlife photographer Tim Flach's series Masked Horses uses classical portraiture to create portraits of horses wearing gas masks, head protectors, equine inhalers and blindfolds.
  • David Gualandris explores Moon Shine, a photo book by Nashville-based photographer Rachel Boillot that documents the disappearing musical and religious traditions of the inhabitants of the Appalachian mountains.
  • In The Moon Forms a Massive Eye Peering Out Over Utah, Grace Ebert presents Phoenix-based photographer Zach Cooley's image from Arches National Park in Moab, Utah, which was named NASA's Photo of the Day.
  • Capture the Atlas has published its The 2020 Northern Lights Photographer of the Year winners. "Warm up and get ready because this trip is going to take you to the most extreme poles of our planet, from the Arctic regions of Russia, Lapland, Norway, Canada and Iceland, to the southernmost latitudes under the Antarctic night sky always with the Northern Lights dancing in the sky." Keep an eye out for Santa Claus, too.
  • Remini is a free photo enhancer for the iOS that can sharpen blurred stills and video.
  • Terry White's The Ultimate 2020 Stocking Stuffer is a great idea for anyone with a smartphone (not just photographers). He has three other bright ideas for photographers, too.
  • Not to be outdone, Scott Kelby has More Stocking Stuffer Ideas, including a $70 Oben ball head.
  • Excire Foto is being discounted 10 percent to $59 when you use the code XMAS2020. We gave it four corners in our July review and found it helpful with our collection of iPhone photos on a Kwilt, too.
  • Rocky Nook will take 40 percent off any of the titles mentioned in its 2020 Gift Guide when you use the code GIFT2020:
  • Adorama is offering up to 50 percent off today only on a variety of products. The link is to cameras discounted at least 25 percent.

More to come! Meanwhile, here's a look back. And please support our efforts...
