In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at Joel Kowsky, Rezo Kezeli, Vogue, seafarers, LensRentals picks, your bag, brand loyalty, Colorado Tripod, backups and 37 free webinars.

  • SpaceX Demo 2 Mission Launches Into History is NASA's Image of the Day. The black and white infrared image shot by Joel Kowsky shows a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket carrying the company's Crew Dragon spacecraft on its way to the International Space Station last May.
  • In A Suitcase of Negatives, Guram Tsibakhashvili discovers an archive of 4,000 images of of Georgia under Soviet rule for four decades. "It took me around a year of wading through the negatives to find the face of the photographer himself," he tells Misho Antadze in an interview. He was Rezo Kezeli, identified by a niece when an advertising company put one of the images on a billboard.
  • Vogue's Kamala Harris Cover Photos Spark Controversy after the publication tweeted two images of its February cover subject. "The issue of lighting black skin properly in magazine editorials and on the screen has been an issue for years," writes reporters Richard Luscombe and Priya Elan, who discuss the problem in detail.
  • Half a Million Seafarers Stranded by the Pandemic presents a few of the 3,000 images submitted to a photography competition run by ITF Seafarers' Trust taken by some of the 400,000 seafarers trapped on cargo ships during the pandemic.
  • The LensRentals staff has put together its list of the Best New Photo & Video Products of 2020.
  • Derrick Story suggests you Replace the Bag, Not the Camera, taking your digital camera and your smartphone on hikes but leaving the big camera behind.
  • In The Thing About Brand Loyalty, Thom Hogan argues, "We as customers are going to have to make our voices heard more clearly."
  • Kevin Raber reviews the $300 Colorado Tripod Centennial Tripod. "The performance of this tripod challenges tripods at four times the price," he writes. "The weight of this tripod makes it great for travel. The height works well for 90 percent of the photography you most likely will do."
  • Scott Kelby recommends you Backup Right Now. He mentions the $63 WD external drive he uses and Carbon Copy Cloner as the software. OWC has just released its Owc Envoy Pro Fx at a premium price for its plug-and-play drop-proof design.
  • Harold Davis has listed the 37 Webinar Recordings he produced in 2020. "The pandemic came along, we hunkered down and got busy with webinars," he writes. And they are all free.

More to come! Meanwhile, here's a look four years back. And please support our efforts...
