26 February 2021

Serif has released Affinity Photo 1.9 with several significant new features. The top five include:

  • Linked Layers. You can now duplicate linked layers and then unlink particular attributes. You can also link specific attributes of completely different layers, then manage everything on the Links panel.
  • Astrophotography Stacking. You can now stack deep sky astrophotography imagery, including FITs documents in addition to Raw files. Stacking can auto-detect hot or cold pixels and manually highlight column defects to produce a cleaner stacked result. There’s also a dedicated background removal filter.
  • Hardware Acceleration on Windows. Mac users have enjoyed the benefits of Metal Compute hardware acceleration since version 1.7 and now Windows users can enjoy GPU processing for raster-based operations like compositing pixel layers, adjustment layers, live filters and raster tools.
  • Pattern Layers. You can create repeating patterns by painting into the bounds of this new layer format, then rotate, shear, scale, clip and mask it for some fantastic design ideas. You can also create pattern layers from existing raster layers.
  • Studio Presets. You can now create, save and recall different interface layouts.

Among the other enhancements in this version are:

  • Live Liquify
  • LUT improvements
  • External file linking
  • Custom brushes from layer selections
  • Divide blend mode
