We've always liked this corner cottage in St. Francis Woods. It has a fairy tale feeling to it, as if it were made of watercolors instead of stones. But as many times as we've wandered by it, we never noticed one little thing.

Friends in High Places. Nikon D300 with 18-200mm Nikkor at 18mm, f3.5, 1/1000 second and ISO 200. Processed in Adobe Camera Raw.

You can barely make it out in the photo above if you look in the top left corner. And squint.

To make it a little easier to see what we found, we took two shots. We zoomed in all the way to 200mm for this one. And then we cropped it to make this little fellow as prominent as possible on our page.

A bit of whimsy?

That's the first thing that struck us. Not just a squirrel but one with a hard hat.

You can't see him from the cottage, though. Perhaps by design.

But he's easily spotted by anyone on the sidewalk who merely looks up.

Looking up may not be an unusual tactic for observing squirrels. But we think it's a little unusual to place garden ornaments high up in a tree.

You have to get a ladder out for one thing. Then you have to climb the ladder. And you have to keep your balance once you get up there. While you're attaching the ornament to the tree.

Hazardous duty in our book.

But sometimes it's helpful to have friends in high places no matter what it takes.
