In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at video histories, Meteora, Dan Ginn, the Kensington SD5700T Dual 4K Dock and John Swarce.

  • In Cameras in Hand, Asian American & Pacific Islanders Bring History to Life, Alexandria Sivak spotlights Visual Communications' Digital Histories program that helps older members of the community tell their story in films. "Students have made films about everything from senior love and dating to learning mountain climbing at age 80 to more personally difficult subjects, such as learning their child is gay and finding the resources they need to support them," she writes.
  • Dahlia Ambrose features Colorado-based photographer Lazar Gintchin's Panoramic Fine Art Landscapes captured in Meteora in Greece. "The immensity of the landscape and the sheer size of monolithic vertical cliff walls are fascinating," Gintchin says. "Then you look at these monasteries, built right to the edge of the cliffs and you wonder -- how did they get the courage to construct structures like these in a place like this?"
  • In How the Pandemic Stopped Me Being an Arrogant Purist Photographer, Dan Ginn explains how his thinking about post processing has changed. "If I were a true purist, I'd be using something like the Rolleiflex twin-lens Reflex, like Diane Arbus once did," he writes.
  • Howard Oakley reviews the $300 Kensington SD5700T Dual 4K Dock hanging off his M1 Mac mini. He discovers "impaired write performance" with attached SSDs but it does include a SD 4.5 card slot. "It's worth noting that, when these docks and hubs claim four Thunderbolt ports, that always seems to include the port you have to use to connect it to your Mac," he adds.
  • I Am Heartbroken, Once Again, Scott Kelby writes in a touching tribute to his friend John Swarce. "I hope you have someone in your life like John and if you're lucky enough, now would be a great time to hug them and tell them so," he writes.

More to come! Meanwhile, here's a look back. And please support our efforts...
