A sympathetic reader recently offered to write us a check "because you deserve to have people paying you to read your work." And not only that but our PayPal button wasn't working.

We tried it out and sure enough, it only returned an error message from PayPal suggesting you try again later.

So we did. But when we tried it again later, we got the same message. It wasn't a temporary glitch.

Apparently, PayPal had willy nilly dropped support for the button we have been using for years now. Not a word of warning. Just a failure to communicate.

We scratched our head and clawed through the support pages looking for updated code. We didn't give up until we'd recreated our original options with not one button but ... [drum roll] ... nine. Here's what we came up with:

BASIC SUB
$30

STANDARD SUB
$60

SPONSOR SUB
$100

PayPal now lets you use PayPal, PayPal credit, another credit card or a debit card to pay for either a Basic Sub, a Standard Sub or a Sponsor Sub.

How clever. [raspberry]

The old form let you use PayPal or a credit card and did it all with one button. That guy must have retired and left it to nine other guys to carry on, a process illuminated here.

They probably couldn't read his code, so they went back to the drawing board.

The team eventually figured out a way to block the old button from functioning while garnering little gold stars and candy bars for writing more code than reasonably required to accomplish the task.

We're going to keep an eye on them for the day they hire some more guys to implement bitcoin and disable the current arrangement without letting anyone know.

By that time, we'll figure out a way for you to be able to subscribe in return for a bottle of wine. As it turned out, we gave the helpful reader our mailing address anyway.

It was easier on both of us.
