In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at Susana Vera, Kai Yokoyama, David Doubilet, a coffee maker, the real Enric Sala and Shortcuts.

  • Reuters photographer Susana Vera captures La Palma's Ashen Landscapes in close ups. The Cumbre Vieja volcano has been spewing ashes for five weeks.
  • The Day You Were Born, I Wasn't Born Yet is a project by Kai Yokoyama. Gregory Eddi Jones interviews the Japanese photographer who mixes his old family photographs with his own Covid-isolation pictures. "I started this project because I was afraid that a pandemic might kill me or my family," he says.
  • Suzanne Sease features Two Worlds, the personal project of David Doubilet that looks at the ocean surface from both above and below. You can see the actual images on Doubilet's site. They will be published in book form next month.
  • Kirk Tuck discovers a new use for his Coffee Maker and grabs an old camera off a shelf near the kitchen to document it.
  • National Geographic has issued a warning on its Enric Sala page about scammers using the photographer's name "to solicit personal and financial information under the guise of National Geographic grant opportunities."
  • Howard Oakley presents a short tutorial on Shortcuts, the macOS Monterey automation tool that migrated from iOS. He shows how to iterate through files in a folder (in this case just counting them), which is what you'd do to rename images or apply copyright information to them or numerous other common tasks.

More to come (including a lot of Nikon news)! Meanwhile, here's a look back. And please support our efforts...
