In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at the Hubble Advent Calendar, books, Helin Bereket, Capture One 22, printing scans, 2022 BigPicture, West Side Story postcards, Pat Naylor and encouraging words.

  • Alan Taylor presents the 14th annual 2021 Hubble Space Telescope Advent Calendar. "Every day until Saturday, December 25, this page will present one new incredible image of our universe from NASA’s Hubble telescope," he writes. He starts with a detail from inside the Monkey Head nebula.
  • Suzanne Sease lists a handful of Books to Purchase for the Holidays.
  • In this Q&A With Color Photographer Helin Bereket, the former architect talks about using color to transform her photographs. "I use gradients to change the mood or to emphasise an object or a color," she says.
  • Capture One 22 will be released Dec. 9, the company announced. The new version will feature Panorama Stitching, HDR Merging, Auto Rotate and more.
  • Jim Kasson got around to printing the scans he made three different ways to see if the method mattered. "My conclusion: there were no visible scanning-related differences among the images, although there were some small differences because the workflows weren't the same," he writes.
  • Submissions for the California Academy of Sciences' 2022 BigPicture: Natural World Photography Competition are now open through Mar. 1, 2022. The competition focuses on the wonders of the natural world and the importance of a healthier planet. Winners will receive a cash prize and have their photographs featured in an exhibit on the public floor of the Academy's museum in Golden Gate Park.
  • Adobe invites you to Create Your Story, Inspired by West Side Story on a postcard. Submissions are open until Dec. 22 and there are plenty of tutorials to help you get to the finish line.
  • Jason Row shares some Memories of My Photography Mentor, his uncle Pat Naylor. "When he found out that I had bought a camera, he took me under his wing and took me to various places just to shoot," he writes.
  • Cherished Words from Stephen Sondheim nurtured generations of theater makers, writes Laura Collins-Hughes. Children will listen. And Sondheim's encouraging words are a good read for anyone in the arts.

More to come! Meanwhile, here's a look back. And please support our efforts...
