In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at war in Ukraine, Ukrainian life, the Canadian trucker standoff and a school photographer.

  • The Guardian's Twenty Photographs of the Week look at the "aftermath of shelling in Kharkiv, burning homes in Irpin, refugees on the Polish border, the desperate flight from Kyiv." Like the very first one of a father holding his newborn in the basement of a maternity hospital during an air raid with the new mother looking on, they are poignant and personal.
  • Grace Ebert showcases Juri Nesterov's street photography of Ukrainian Life Across Decades. "When I look into the camera's viewfinder, something inexplicable happens: thousands of images appear in my memory," he confesses. His images stand in stark contrast to those published by the Guardian today.
  • In The (Visual) Chaos of the Canadian Trucker Standoff, Michael Shaw and Cara Finnegan examine a photo taken by Spencer Platt for Getty on Feb. 9, of long-haul trucks blocking downtown streets in Ottawa over vaccine mandates:
  • Puzzled by the inflexibility of a School Photographer, a teacher asks what was up on Reddit and gets a good answer.

More to come! Meanwhile, here's a look back. And please support our efforts...
