Matinee: 'Celebrate International Women's Day' Share This on LinkedIn   Tweet This   Forward This

5 March 2022

Saturday matinees long ago let us escape from the ordinary world to the island of the Swiss Family Robinson or the mutinous decks of the Bounty. Why not, we thought, escape the usual fare here with Saturday matinees of our favorite photography films?

So we're pleased to present the 438th in our series of Saturday matinees today: Celebrate International Women's Day.

This 3:32 video is a slide show of portraits of contemporary women from Massachusetts made by Dan Busler. Busler is a commercial photographer in Walpole, Mass., with a client list that includes the Boston Globe, Boston Herald, People Magazine, New York Times and Vanity Fair, among others.

He put together this production to celebrate International Women's Day on March 8, this Tuesday. It begins with a short statement:

Today we honor, today we celebrate ... Mothers, Daughters, Sisters, Wives, Grandmothers, God Mothers, Aunts, Nieces, Ex-Wives, Girlfriend, Sweetheart, Our Better Half, Our Main Squeeze, Lady Friend, Babe, Inamorata, You are our inspiration, teacher and best friend.

They're great portraits, to begin with. But they're also real women. A few of these real women are no doubt models but most of them needed a head shot or environmental portrait or boudoir session or wedding photographer or event coverage or religious ceremony memory. You name it, Busler shot it.

And they consequently range in age from young girls to older matrons. Including a scan of Busler's mother in her teens, the only image he didn't shoot, we presume.

It's a lively romp through his portfolio of female portraits that's so much fun we didn't at all mind going through it a few times to write this introduction.

It ends, as it began, with a short statement:

Ladies, Girls, Friends, Clients, You are my strength and my rock.

To which, we will add just this: [blowing all you ladies a kiss]

😘
