DxO Publishes Two White Papers Share This on LinkedIn   Tweet This   Forward This

DxO has published two white papers offering a deeper dive into its PureRaw pre-processor and its Fufjilm X-Trans demosaicizing. We recently reviewed PureRaw 2, which adds some efficient workflow options to the software.

LINEAR DNG PROCESSING

In this white paper, DxO explains the advantages of shooting Raw rather than JPEG and how the DNG Raw format allows some optimizations like denoising and optical corrections while leaving creative options like white balance, tone curves and color grading for your image editing software.

"By taking a RAW file and converting it to a Linear DNG file with one application and then editing it in another, you get to combine the strengths — one mathematical, one creative — of two different pieces of software," the piece explains.

X-TRANS PROCESSING

In the second white paper, head scientist Wolf Hauser details the unique 6x6 filtering pattern of Fujifilm's X-Trans sensor, including both its advantages over the more common 2x2 Bayer pattern and its disadvantages.

Demosaicing the X-Trans pattern is far more complex than demosaicing the Bayer pattern. But DxO was able to leverage its investment in machine learning to develop a demosaicing algorithm for X-Trans.

"After 10 days of intensive work, our computer developed a highly sophisticated algorithm that outperforms our traditional demosaicing at low ISO and both our traditional demosaicing and denoising at high ISO," Hauser writes.
