In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at Chiron Duong, mermaiding, a dahlia, Matt Stuart, lenses, Texture vs. Clarity and Maksim Levin.
- Gabrielle Lawrence features An Ethereal Daily Portrait Series by Chiron Duong that captures the Vietnamese tradition of Ao Dai. "Duong's obscurations arouse a hint of magic in the peek of color beneath the gown, the outline of distinct facial features or the strong posture of a subject gliding through a scene," she writes. Chiara Bardelli Nonino interviewed Duong earlier this year for PhptpVogue about his Portraits of Ao Dai project.
- In Fin-Tastic! Growing 'Mermaiding' Subculture Makes a Splash, Kristen Gelineau explores the new fascination with swimming in tails, which have become much more affordable (and popular) than before. With photos by Aaron Favila.
- Harold Davis had a Perfect Dahlia Day before the withering heat took over.
- In Think Like a Street Photographer, Matt Stuart share his thoughts from his new book. "My general outlook is, get up, get out and go and find things," he writes. "I try to summon an excitement and amazement for life."
- LensRentals covers listeners' questions about Lens Inspection, Filters and Repair Reliability.
- Scott Kelby answers the persistent question: Which One Is Better? Lightroom's Texture Slider or the Clarity Slider? "One isn't really better than the other, because depending on the image, Clarity might look better on one and Texture might look better on the next or maybe a mixture of the two," he writes. Clarity affects tonality while Texture enhances detail, he sums up the difference.
- Reuters reports Russian Troops 'Executed' Photographer in Ukraine, Press Group Says. Reporters Without Borders made the claim about the death of Maksim Levin earlier this year in a 16-page report released Wednesday. "The evidence against the Russian forces is overwhelming," the report notes.
More to come! Meanwhile, here's a look three years back. And please support our efforts...
