In some sports there's an actual finish line which contestants must cross before the clock stops and their race is over. In other sports, it's more complicated.

The Finish Line. Nikon D300 with 18-200mm Nikkor at 24mm (36mm equivalent), f11, 1/500 second and ISO 200. Processed in Adobe Camera Raw.

But as a wise man* once said, "It ain't over 'til it's over."

Baseball, which doesn't have a clock, proves the adage true over and over. Just a few days ago the San Francisco Giants went to bat in the bottom of the ninth against the league-leading Milwaukee Brewers trailing 5-2.

They had three outs to go but the league's best closer in Josh Hader was on the mound to end the game.

But it wasn't over.

Giants catcher Joey Bart hit a home run to start the inning. That made it 5-3 with nobody out. Wilmer Flores, pinch hitting, produced a conventional fly ball easily gloved. One down, but it wasn't over. Darin Ruf stepped up and hit another one out, 5-4.

Then things got weird.

Austin Slater got his fourth hit of the night, beating the odds. Then Hader hit Yermín Mercedes to put the winning run on base. Thairo Estrada then popped up but to no man's land where it bounced safely on the grass, loading the bases.

That brought up the struggling outfielder Mike Yastrzemski. A ground ball could start a double play and end the game, giving the Brewers a win. But it wasn't over.

Hader threw a fastball but it never crossed the plate. Yaz hit it squarely out of the park for a walk-off grand slam.

It was over then. 8-5 Giants.

When we walked over this finish line today, we thought we'd take a photo to remind us it ain't over 'til it's over. We could use the reminder.
