In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at moths, Oklahoma, the Ricoh WG-80, the Canon 5DS R, portrait tips and Instagram/Facebook.
- To celebrate National Moth Week (who knew?), the Guardian presents a few stunning images of Magnificent Moths of the Catskill Mountains captured by Carla Rhodes.
- Suzanne Sease features Jay Fram's personal project photographing Tahlequah, a small town in Cherokee County, Okla. He'd originally planned the shoot for a client but when the client killed the project, he went anyway. He came back with "a portrait of generous people and hard work in a rural part of middle America, the close heaviness of heat and humidity, undergrowth, weeds, open spaces, tradition."
- Hillary Grigonis reviews the Ricoh WG-80 with mixed feelings. "The Ricoh WG-80 is a fair-weather camera," she writes. "It's OK if you never take it more than a few feet underwater or don't shoot at dusk or take it indoors or try to shoot action. It's an affordable camera for waterproof snapshots. I also think waterproof compacts make the best cameras for kids."
- Mike Johnston found The Best Bargain Out There Right Now. The Canon 5DS R dSLR (2015) is on sale at B&H for $1,499. "Considering it listed for $3,900 new, that's beyond a deep discount," he writes.
- Jason Little promises These Five Tips Will Improve Your Portrait Photography.
- In Instagram and Facebook -- as We Knew Them -- Are Dead, Hans Hartman survives prevailing opinions on the two platforms. "If you abandon your DNA in lieu of a quick buck, eventually, the users who have put you on the map will declare you dead," he warns.
