To mark World Photographers' Day on Friday, Aug. 19, Miops has announced it will donate five percent of its sales revenues through its online store for cataract surgery in Africa and will also directly transfer additional donations from its customers to this project.

"At Miops, while helping photographers take the most beautiful and clearest photos with the products we have designed for more than 10 years, we could not ignore the patients with cataracts, who could be treated but had to live with this unclear vision in their daily life due to financial difficulties," said Onur Celik, CEO and co-founder of the company.

"Of course, we will not have the opportunity to touch the lives of all patients in this situation, but with the support of our audience, we will be a light to as many people as possible, enabling them to look around with smiling eyes and raising awareness as much as we can."

The company has focused its effort on Africa where "many people lose their eyesight from cataracts at a young age due to hot weather, nutrition and climatic conditions." In addition, there are not enough ophthalmologists, especially in rural areas, to combat the disease.

But a 15-minute $75 surgery can restore vision to an African cataract patient, the company calculates. It has already raised enough money for seven patients to get the surgery.

With this project, Miops donates part of its revenues and transfers all donations collected from its customers directly to the surgeries of cataract patients.

Cataract disease is generally seen in the elderly in developed countries and causes blindness if not treated. It is commonly seen around the world due to malnutrition, long-term exposure to intense light, eye trauma, as well as age. Due to technical and financial difficulties, millions of people lose their eyesight because they cannot have surgery and they continue their lives dependent on others. Africa is one of the regions where many people lose their eyesight from cataracts at a young age due to hot weather, nutrition and climatic conditions. When the insufficient number of ophthalmologists is added to this, many patients, especially in rural areas, are condemned to darkness without surgery.

A cataract is the formation of a cloudy screen over the natural lens which is normally clear, located immediately behind the colored section of our eye, but for any reason loses its transparency, becomes cloudy and impairs vision. According to the degree of the cataract in eyes affected by the disease, this can begin as slightly clouded vision and reach a level where only light is visible. Cataract, the most common cause of blindness in the world, is a loss of sight that can be treated.
