Matinee: 'First Day of School' Share This on LinkedIn   Tweet This   Forward This

Saturday matinees long ago let us escape from the ordinary world to the island of the Swiss Family Robinson or the mutinous decks of the Bounty. Why not, we thought, escape the usual fare here with Saturday matinees of our favorite photography films?

So we're pleased to present the 465th in our series of Saturday matinees today: First Day of School.

This 3:46 slide show captures the first day of school this year in the Peoria Unified School District, which is comprised of Glendale, Peoria, Surprise and Youngtown in Arizona.

It features what we estimate to be a record number of smiles for one video.

Peoria Unified went back to school on Aug. 10 and the school district put this slide show together to celebrate the occasion. If our calculations are correct (despite having left school some time ago), this would be the 133rd first day of school in the district.

It's a big district, serving over 36,000 students in 34 elementary schools, seven high schools and one non-traditional high school.

We loved the classroom shots. We've never seen so many students so engaged whether it was listening to a teacher read a picture book or aiming a pencil at a piece of paper.

And the teachers and staff looked just as thrilled as the kids to be back together in the classroom again.

But it's not just about the smiles. This may be a record for the number of intelligent people in one video, too.

And just imagine. By the end of the school year they'll be just that much smarter!

I love this observation ... and if you add in the teachers, it adds up to even more!
