In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at starlings, Emma Hardy, exhibition lighting, Affinity v2, iCloud Shared Photos, security guards and Mastodon.

  • Devid Gualandris features The Swirling Displays of Starlings captured by S_ren Solkær. He began shooting the formations in 2017 and they are now a fine art project and published in Black Sun.
  • Mee-Lai Stone presents image of Family Life From All Angles by Emma Hardy. The images, culled from 20 years of work, appear in the book Permissions and will be on exhibit at 10 14 Gallery in London from Dec. 1 to Jan. 27, 2023.
  • Mike Johnston complains about The Worst Exhibition Lighting I Ever Saw, a Paul Strand show in Chicago. But, as readers point out in the comments, dim museum lighting protects original works on paper. Johnston, though, is struggling with the tonality of his black-and-whites on his computer monitor, recommending one low-key image be viewed in a darkened room.
  • Serif has released The Next Generation of Affinity with a 40 percent discount at $99.99 and a new "universal license" that provides the entire Affinity v2 suite including Publisher for iPad! on all your devices, across macOS, Windows and iPadOS. See the What's New page for details on the update.
  • Jason Snell posts a quick tip to Replace Albums With Keywords in iCloud Shared Photos.
  • A Reddit poster asks about Security Guards and Photography. An interesting twist to this discussion, which in general affirms the right to shoot in public, is that the photographer was using a tripod. For special events you may need a permit.
  • Colossal (where Grace Ebert writes about photography) is now on Mastodon as it transitions from Twitter. "We like Mastodon because it has a lot of similar features, but unlike Twitter, which is privately owned, Mastodon is open-source and ad-free," the company writes. We mention it because we've never been comfortable with Twitter even though we use it only as an alternative to our RSS feed. We'll be looking into Mastodon ourselves and welcome your thoughts.

More to come! Meanwhile, here's a look back. And please support our efforts...
