On Thursday, this year's Beaujolais Nouveau was released and we found cases of Georges Duboeuf's bottling at our local grocery store Friday afternoon. We could not resist.

By law (French law), Beaujolais Nouveau is released on the third Thursday of every November at 12:01 a.m. just weeks after the harvest, making it the first wine of the French harvest of that year.

But this is the first time we've gotten out hands on a bottle as soon as it was released.

We put it in the refrigerator to chill and had it at dinner.

"The last few years of grape growing in France have been a lesson in patience and perseverance, but this vintage was quite different," observed Franck Duboeuf, CEO of Les Vins Georges Duboeuf and son of the late Georges Duboeuf.

"Record high temperatures and drought conditions meant the grapes ripened earlier than normal and were small due to lack of rainfall. The result was a perfectly balanced fruit with a high concentration of flavor -- we're delighted with the outcome."

We were too.

French designer Alain Vavro designed the label (a Duboeuf tradition) to be "a graphic representation of the harvest, featuring contrasting shades complemented by eye-catching pops of color."

There's one more special thing about this bottle besides the wine and the label: the cork.

The Georges Duboeuf Cork Contest returns, featuring a unique code on each cork of 2022 Georges Duboeuf Beaujolais Nouveau. Prizes include Duboeuf-branded items like berets, limited-edition ties and scarves. Visit the contest site for the details.

Wish us luck.
