In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at the World Cup, photo editing software, top rented gear, Horst Baumann, Flickr and a BorrowLenses sale.

  • The Guardian presents a selection of images from yesterday's dramatic World Cup Final in which France rallied twice only to lose to Argentina and Lionel Messi on penalty kicks. Croatia beat Morocco on Saturday for third place.
  • Thom Hogan asks, Has Anything Really Changed in Software? He looks at Photoshop ("still iterating, still getting better, still the best tool overall"), Capture One ("still in 'catch up' mode to Photoshop/Lightroom"), Luminar ("I'm no longer impressed by Skylum's products"), On1 Photo Raw ("a great deal of UI clutter with no clear theme, their automatic masking tends to need lots of adjustments and I don't like their hidden panel style"), DxO PhotoLab 6 ("approachable, deep in features yet broadly applies things automatically and I find it very consistent across different camera models") and Serif's Affinity Photo ("all the basic Photoshop capabilities are there"). We'd add Exposure X7 to the stable if you're in the market.
  • LensRentals lists the Top Rented Cameras and Lenses of 2022. "To us, it feels like a good judgment of the industry, as we're one of the world's largest rental houses for lenses and cameras," the company wrote.
  • Ccurator Hans-Michael Koetzle is interviewed about Horst H. Baumann, who died three years ago, as an exhibition of the photograph's work opens in Mannheim. "He wasn't someone who wished for a little house with a garden, but rather someone who would prefer to pick up the phone and discuss laser projects with NASA," he says.
  • Flickr is hiring a Program Manager, Tech Lead, Producer and Archivist in 2023 as it works on a 100 year plan "to make sure Flickr will be preserved for future generations."
  • BorrowLenses is offering a 50 percent discount during its Used Sale, which ends at midnight tonight. No code required and free shipping via UPS.

More to come! Meanwhile, here's a look five years back. And please support our efforts...
