Matinee: 'Where Magic Happens' Share This on LinkedIn   Tweet This   Forward This

Saturday matinees long ago let us escape from the ordinary world to the island of the Swiss Family Robinson or the mutinous decks of the Bounty. Why not, we thought, escape the usual fare here with Saturday matinees of our favorite photography films?

So we're pleased to present the 480th in our series of Saturday matinees today: Where Magic Happens.

This 1:47 animated clip from 150UP was made for the Italian design firm Alessi. You might know Alessi from its elegant espresso pots. But in this video the company's products come to life to tell the story of a Christmas light as it flies all over the world, looking for its home.

Bolts of light escape the lab and take off to the Roman Colosseum on a worldwide tour that takes them to London, Paris, New York and Tokyo -- all in 3D renderings of their familiar landmarks. And all at night.

That's entertaining enough. But we especially liked the flow of the light as it breaks into beams that dance through these landscapes.

Photography, it is repeated to exhaustion, is about light. And here we have light itself as the protagonist. The light that illuminates the world becoming the light in your eyes.

That's the magic, not just of Christmas, but of photography itself.
