In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at Alpine ski resorts, the Filter Photo Festival, a TP-Link solution, Aputure lighting, Maven magnetic filters plus Martin and Virginia Davis.

  • Matt Fidler shows how Alpine Ski Resorts Struggle Amid Snow Shortage. He reports "unseasonably warm weather as a result of global warming" has forced many to close.
  • Jonathan Blaustein features The Best Work I Saw at the Filter Photo Festival in Chicago last September. Photographers included are Laidric Stevenson, Colette LaRue, Lyn Swett Miller, Jason Kerzinski, Jack Long, Beth Lilly, Kelly Wright, Rachel Portesi and Jason Lindsey.
  • In Update: Wi-Fi (TP-Link Deco XE75), Michael Johnston solves his WiFi coverage problem with a TP-Link solution, retiring his 2016 Apple Airport Time Capsule. Ironically, we were glad to have three routers in a wired star configuration during our power failure the other day, which allowed us to turn off the new one to protect it when the power came back on. You can never have too many (well behaved) routers. That's what mesh is all about.
  • In Exploring Aputure Lighting, Ryan Hill at LensRentals explains what the company's fastest-growing manufacturer in lighting equipment can do for you.
  • Feroz Khan reviews Maven Magnetic Filters from Michael Maven. The magnetic set of three ND, one CPL and one UV filter with a base ring and magnetic lens/filter cap is currently available on Indiegogo for $149. "Each type of filter is encased in a uniquely colored ring," he notes, making them easy to identify.
  • In Remembering Martin and Virginia Davis, Harold Davis celebrates the lives of his parents, who both passed away on Jan. 1. after 71 years of marriage. "It was as if Martin held out his hand to Virginia and said, 'Come on. Let's go!'" he writes. Condolences, Harold.

We note two years after the Jan. 6 insurrection, prosecutions continue to grow (gift link) while Rusty Bowers, the former top Republican in Arizona's house of representatives who stood up to Trump's attempts to overturn the election, will be among 12 others who took a personal risk for democrary to be awarded the Presidential Citizens Medal by Joe Biden at the White House. The wheels of justice grind slow but fine.

More to come! Meanwhile, here's a look back. And please support our efforts...
