In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at indigenous photographers, Afghan women athletes, Tyrone Turner, old 50mm lenses, more strange utterances, the LensCulture portrait awards, gifts and disk image formats.

  • The Amon Carter Museum exhibit Speaking with Light features the work of over 30 photographers, including Wendy Red Star, Sky Hopinka, Cara Romero, Tom Jones, Zig Jackson and Sarah Sense through Jan. 22. The Guardian presents a selection of images from the show.
  • A number of Afghan Women Athletes, barred from playing by the Taliban, posed with the equipment of the sports they loved for portraits by Associated Press photographer Ebrahim Noroozi.
  • Suzanne Sease features the Antarctica/Lousiana Diptych Project of Tyrone Turner. "As frigid wind whipped across the ship's bow, I held the railing with one hand and steadied my camera with the other," he introduces the images.
  • Kirk Tuck muses on Vintage-Y 50mm Lenses. "Perfection can be boring. Superb-ness can be wearing." And he's not Gen Z.
  • In Strange Things Said XXI, Thom Hogan takes on a few more confusing subjects. On the last, we opined (and have stuck to our guns) in How to Spell 'Raw' in 2012, one of earliest pieces here.
  • The 10th annual LensCulture Portrait Awards are open for submissions. Deadline is Feb. 15.
  • Kent DuFault compiled an extensive list of Gifts for Photographers in three price categories. "Maybe you didn't realize this -- but if there is a photographer on your shopping list -- you have no shortage of gift options!" he writes.
  • Howard Oakley asks, Which Disk Image Format? And provides recommendations after testing a few on an OWC Envoy Pro FX 4-TB external SSD connected to a Mac Studio M1 Max running Ventura 13.1 and APFS.

More to come! Meanwhile, here's a look back. And please support our efforts...
