In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at Devin Allen, Tony O'Shea, wildlife cameras, Yassine Toumi, Luis Carlos Tovar, tool tips, character, a workshop, an Epson paper, inspiration, scale, straightening and new M2 machines.
- Seyma Bayram profiles photographer Devin Allen in How One Photographer Is Using His Camera as a Weapon Against Poverty and Racism. "I was raised by my mom and my grandmother, you know and one of my favorite things to capture is the grace of a Black woman and all that power on the front lines," he says.
- Tony O'Shea has photographed the Kerry Beagle drag hunt for three decades.
- In Snarl, You're on Candid Camera (gift link), Emily Anthes reports on a new study made with images captured by Snapshot Wisconsin using wildlife cameras that show "that human disturbance can squeeze animals closer together, increasing the odds that they bump into each other."
- Yassine Toumi captured everyday life in Morocco From Casablanca to Dakar. "In my opinion a photographer has to know the message he wants to convey," he says. "Additionally the light and the framing are very important. To put it briefly: message, light, framing."
- Valeria Posada-Villada interviews Luis Carlos Tovar about his photobook Jardín de mi Padre which addresses the lingering imprint of his father's kidnapping on the family's life.
- Julieanne Kost describes Ten Little Known Tips for Working With Tools in Photoshop, including how to reset a tools options with a click when things go awry.
- Thom Hogan wonders, Do Lenses Have Character? "The big difference between how I see lenses being designed now vs. how they were designed last century is simple: a reliance on in-camera lens corrections," he writes.
- Kirk Tuck conducts A Private Photography Workshop. "It was really fun for me to work one to one with an aspiring photographer instead of having to do a workshop in a group situation," he writes.
- Mark Segal reviews Epson Legacy Baryta II Paper. "The main differences between the discontinued Legacy Baryta product and Legacy Platine are that the former had an alpha-cellulose base and modest OBA* content, while the latter has a cotton fiber base and no OBA content," he writes.
- Dave Williams offers some quirky advice for Endless Inspiration. "Finding a series of hashtags that we are interested in, such as #landscapelovers or #auroraborealis and following the hashtags will give us an endless source of inspiration," he writes.
- Jason Row explores Why Scale Is Important in Outdoor Photography.
- Derrick Story likes The Much-Improved Straighten Tool in Photos for Ventura.
- Apple has announced a new MacBook Pro and Mac Mini line-up featuring the M2 Pro and M2 Max. In his report, Dan Moren notes, "Apple's clearly positioning the M2 Pro mini as a replacement for the 27-inch iMac, as in its press release it specifically stacks up the M2 Pro's performance against a 27-inch Intel Core i7, suggesting once again that a larger iMac isn't likely to appear anytime soon."
