Friday Slide Show: Stairways After the Storm Share This on LinkedIn   Tweet This   Forward This

20 January 2023

There is not a lot of flat ground in hilly San Francisco. When someone claims to have found some, we tell them to let their foot off the brake with the transmission in neutral and see which way they roll. Because they will roll.

Cable cars are one well-known attempt to deal with the hills. And stairways are, if lesser-known, another. You have to look for the stairways, carved out between private homes to get from one street down to the next. But they're all over.

In our neighborhood they tend to be rather elegant. Not the wooden stairs of Telegraph Hill or Harry St. but sweeping staircases fit for a Hollywood entrance.

During a break in our January storms, we took a walk to Golden Gate Heights and came back to the bunker down the staircases we came across. Two of them, mainly.

They were, we are sad to report, in disrepair.

Cracks are inevitable in earthquake country. But the crumbling we hope will be addressed when the weather improves.

Along the way, we confess to occasionally looking up. You tend to do that when intermittent downpours are coming through.

What we saw, though, were some glorious clouds. So we thought we'd include them in this slide show.

See if you can find any silver linings.
