We often labor late into the night to bring you a fresh Photo Corners in the morning. And when we do, this is what we see as we close up shop when our shift ends.
There is quite a lot going on in this image but that, perhaps, is a story for another time. Everything you see has a particularly special meaning to us. Those Two Rocks on either side of the sea shell, for example.
But it was the scene itself that struck us last night as we wrapped things up.
Lit by a string of Christmas tree lights strung along the top of the bookcases, it seemed almost like a museum display of the three brightest items.
We snapped a shot with our image stabilized iPhone, which set the shutter to 1/4 second. And we worked on it a bit in Camera Raw to bring back the illumination obscured by the dark JPEG capture.
We thought about correcting perspective but decided against it so the three towers of Library of America slip covers were not cropped.
In the background you can see a New York Times illustration of a silhouette with colored birthday candles burning on its head and, far to the right, a couple of our old California Driver's Licenses.
In the foreground is a black-and-white print of a Giacometti portrait by Sabine Weiss hanging just behind a Japanese vessel filled with old toscano stubs intended for a pipe. A diagram of ukulele chords hangs from the slip cases.
And then there are those three main objects, illuminated clearly even in the dim light. The local stone, the sea shell, the Carrara marble.
The stuff of dreams we take to bed.
