In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at fungi blooms, orcas, Hugh Kretschmer, feathering and zooming, Lumina and February opportunities.

  • Kate Mothes presents The Astonishing Biodiversity of Fungi Blooms in Max Mudie's macro photographs. "Documenting a range of fungi and slime molds living in the U.K., the Sussex-based photographer is fascinated by the sheer breadth of colors, sizes and textures he encounters in both rural and urban spaces," she writes.
  • French freediver Arthur Guérin-Boëri takes A Swim With Orcas and Oliver Morin takes the photographs. The temperature of the water is about 37 degrees in the winter Arctic (25 degrees in the air) as Guérin-Boëri dives to 50 ft. with a snorkel.
  • Suzanne Sease features Boxed, the amusing personal project of Hugh Kretschmer. "This project's impetus started with watching boardwalk chalk artists create elongated illustrations that, when viewed from a distance, foreshortened to appear three-dimensional, especially when people interacted with them," he writes. "In my approach, the opposite happens- a 3D collage assemblage that ends up appearing in two dimensions."
  • Zach Sutton explores Feathering & Zooming lighting techniques. "By having a better understanding of your light's falloff properties and its beam angle, you'll be able to get better control of your lights and use them in new creative ways," he writes.
  • Salvatore Polito has released his free Lumina: Professional Camera for the iPhone with manual exposure and focus control, configurable post processing, bracketing and an integrated gallery with Exif reader, among other features.
  • Colossal lists a few February 2023 Opportunities for photographers.

More to come! Meanwhile, here's a look back. And please support our efforts...
