In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at Lynsey Addario, sheep, three camera myths and resizing for the Web.

  • Trading Books for a Rifle: The Teacher Who Volunteered in Ukraine (gift link) by Andrew E. Kramer features the photos of Lynsey Addario. Yulia Bondarenko was a 30-year-old Ukrainian middle school teacher who had never held a rifle before. "She has not yet fired her rifle in combat, but if her platoon is sent to the front, she said, she feels ready to fight," Kramer writes.
  • In I Left the Dog at Home, Mariko Klug takes a walk without her dog who would have barked at the sheep she was photographing with her new iPhone. "Just as I got there, the fog was lifting. The sun peeked out and illuminated the grass and their wool; it made for a beautiful, peaceful moment," she says.
  • Derrick Story tackles Camera Myths That Seem to Persist. Subjects include ISO setting, landscape sensor size and megapixels. "I guess these aren't really photography myths," he writes. "They're just beliefs that aren't true anymore." Myths get such a bad name.
  • A Reddit user has a Question About Image Quality So I Don't Lose My Job. They've been uploading full-resolution images (5184x3888 pixels) to a Web site for display at 1280x960. They're blurry and the boss isn't happy. The advice isn't very good either. So as a reader of a publication that deals with this for every image, we thought you should know: resize down for the medium and sharpen the resulting image.

More to come! Meanwhile, here's a look back. And please support our efforts...
