In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at AP photos ofo the week, Richard Sandler, Narelle Autio, the crazy uncle hobbyist effect, skin retouching, CFexpress Type B card sustained write speed and the Sony Star Sphere Satellite.

  • Associated Press photo editor Anita Baca curates the agency's top Photos of the Week, from people marking the one-year anniversary of the Russian invasion of Ukraine to carnival celebrations in Brazil, Spain and Lithuania.
  • In Between the Streets, Mee-Lai Stone presents a few black-and-white images of New York by Richard Sandler. The Eyes of the City, a major restrospective of his work, runs through Mar. 26 at the Bronx Documentary Center.
  • In Journey Through the Outback, photographer Narelle Autio spent two years exploring Australia. Autio, who won the 2002 Leica Oskar Barnack Award, made the images on a road trip in 2003 and 2004, camping in a small tent. "It was pure documentation of what I saw, experienced and, ultimately, was subconsciously drawn to. No agenda," she says.
  • Left to himself, Kirk Tuck took a series of black-and-white images in Downtown Austin that include an old Pontiac and a Harley-Davidson with his Leica SL and 58mm Voitlander. "There is now a loneliness in walking around with a camera photographing random stuff," he writes. "Sure, people occasionally stopped to photograph something with an iPhone but I was more or less the crazy uncle hobbyist that time and culture have passed by."
  • Scott Kelby demonstrates this Skin Retouching Trick in a one-minute clip:

  • Thom Hogan takes a deep dive in the Minimum Sustained Write Speed of CFexpress Type B cards. "Let me just state it up front: the label on the front of the card mostly lies to you, so ignore it," he writes.
  • In First Image From Sony Star Sphere Satellite Released, Zac Aubert reports "a significant step forward in space exploration" that "opens up new opportunities for studying our planet and the universe beyond as Sony prepares to give anyone the opportunity to take a picture from space, from their home."

More to come! Meanwhile, here's a look five years back. And please support our efforts...
