Enhancing the enjoyment of taking pictures with news that matters, features that entertain and images that delight. Published frequently.
1 March 2023
We've just archived Volume 12, Number 2 of Photo Corners on the Archive page with 16 Features, 14 commented News stories, 24 Editor's Notes (which included 145 items of interest) and one site note for a total of 55 stories.
Of those, 35 stories featured 108 images, there was one holiday special and eight stories had gear specifications tables. There were also two obituaries.
That's not significantly different from last year (although we published two more stories this February) so we took a look at 10 years ago. In 2013 we published 10 Features, 23 commented News stories and five Editor's Notes (which included 20 items of interest) for a total of 40 stories.
Apparently we're getting more productive every decade.
READERSHIP LEVELS continued an upward swing. The bump in unique sites we saw in December and that continued in January has persisted through February. Welcome aboard, new readers!
We also saw a 145 percent increase last month in pages served, which we like to think of as articles read. Considering we published less in the short month than usual, that's notable.
OUR TOP STORIES also continued a recent pattern.
Seven of the top 10 stories last month were our curated Around The Horn columns. They were infiltrated by Joyce Dopkeen's obituary, the story about the new Nikkor Z primes and our slide show East of Twin Peaks.
Ironically, our piece on Valentine's Day came in 13th (rather than, say, 14th). We're not sure what that tells you.
TODAY'S SITE UPDATES should now reflect the current year throughout the site.
Oddly enough, we don't fully turn over the year until February each year. That's when we add the new year's index and update all the old indices to include a link to it.
We're under the impression everything is up to date but if you discover otherwise, please let us know. We're counting on you.
IT'S BEEN A DIFFICULT MONTH around here but we've been sustained by producing Photo Corners each day. That's not the usual recipe for dealing with distress but it works for us.
The catch, perhaps, is that the work unavoidably reflects the distress. But we like to think of it as making metaphors.
So, for example, the images in that slide show featuring scaffolding had been sitting around for a few months before we started visiting a skilled nursing facility every day. That's when they started to mean something to us.
That, we suspect, is the real payoff of work like this. It invites reflection and expression at a time when life itself seems to stymie both.
