In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at Jan Erik Waider, the Instant Box Camera, three commercial photographers, Capture One Pro, Kobe Bryant settlement and Patti Smith.

  • In Shrouded in Mist, Spectral Icebergs Float Around the Antarctic Peninsula, Kate Mothes features Jan Erik Waider's nearly monochromatic images of the icy islands. "Waider is always astonished by the spectrum of the color blue, which on cloudy days can appear even more vibrant, as if glowing from within," she writes.
  • The The Instant Box Camera i a Kickstarter project from Lukas Birk that includes a "portable, light weight camera and darkroom, all in one." It's manufactured by "an organization that gives work and trains unemployed youth, as well as asylum seekers between the ages of 15 and 25."
  • In Photographers, How Much Do You Make? Rob Haggert details the income of three commercial photographers in different fields.
  • Capture One Pro 16.1 has been released with improved support for additional tone-mapping metadata ProRaw files so they render as you see them on your iPhone, a New Layer menu with the option to move all adjustments to a new Filled Layer and improvements to Cull and Importer.
  • The Associated Press reports Kobe Bryant's Family Agree to $28.5m Settlement After Crash Photos Shared. The settlement resolves the remaining claims in a lawsuit over deputies and firefighters sharing graphic photos of the NBA star, his 13-year-old daughter and other victims killed in a 2020 helicopter crash.
  • Andrew Molitor receied 'A Book of Days' by Patti Smith for his birthday and he loves it. "It's really good; as a bonus it's a book one can return to briefly or at length, forever," he writes. "I love it because it essentially humble."

More to come! Meanwhile, here's a look back. And please support our efforts...
