Saturday matinees long ago let us escape from the ordinary world to the island of the Swiss Family Robinson or the mutinous decks of the Bounty. Why not, we thought, escape the usual fare here with Saturday matinees of our favorite photography films?
So we're pleased to present the 490th in our series of Saturday matinees today: Stand Together.
This up-lifting 2:23 video from the Washington Area Women’s Foundation arrives just as we begin celebrating Women's History month.
The organization, founded in 1998, has awarded more than $15 million in grants to over 200 community-based organizations in the Washington, D.C. region. It found a need and it is filling it.
The foundation's approach to helping Washington women overcome the roadblocks in their lives is simply to "stand together" with them. It illustrates this with a series of intimate stills and short clips that show us real people living real lives and the difference a little help can make to them.
"A little opportunity can go a long way," the narrator explains. Education, job training, advocacy, research and those grants are all part of the package.
We thought the video was particularly well done.
There are no famous names celebrated in the video but we had to admire the individuals who appear in it. Each one seemed to be an exemplar of the stuff heroes are made of.
The heroes who, after all, make the history we celebrate.
