In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at the week in pictures, Sylvia Rafael, France, observation and lens equivalents.

  • Associated Press photo editor Eloy Martin in Madrid curates The Week in Pictures from the disaster caused by tropical Cyclone Freddy in Malawi to protests against French President Macron's pension reforms in Paris to the 95th Academy Awards.
  • In A Mossad Agent's Treasure Trove of Photos (gift link), Ronen Bergman presents the photographs of the late Sylvia Rafael who worked undercover as a news agency photographer. "The pictures open a window into the two lives of a woman, as a spy and a photographer. They include portraits of regional leaders like President Gamal Abdel Nasser of Egypt and his successor, Anwar Sadat, oblivious to the fact that they were being photographed by a Mossad agent."
  • In France Erupts in Strikes and Protests, the Guardian documents the public reaction as the government tries to push through unpopular pension changes.
  • Watch What You Photograph! Melissa Groo advises. "You never know what you might witness, especially if you sit for a long spell and observe," she writes.
  • A Reddit poster asks, Can We Drop the 'Full Frame Equivalent' Yet? As a few respondents point out, it's a standard which makes comparisons meaningful as crop factors themselves vary.

More to come! Meanwhile, here's a look back. And please support our efforts...
