We're tempted to concoct some distinction between gardening and landscaping. But it would be an artificial one. Gardening is an ongoing activity akin to maintenance while landscaping is the execution of a design.
There was a rather neglected lot behind the nearby Muni Metro station that was inhabited by a row of cherry trees and a lawn. Someone got the bright idea to landscape it during the pandemic and it's become something of a mini park.
There is a seating area with tree stumps for chairs and walkways to get from one neighborhood to another. And a few ceremonial trees. Plus an assortment of ground cover.
The river rocks add an interesting dimension. We first encountered them at Lotusland in Santa Barbara where they were used to cheer up desert flora by retaining heat during the warm days and releasing it at night.
It's been in the low 50s here throughout the winter and into the spring, unusually cold. And summer is all fog. So the rocks promise some sort of moderation for the trees they surround in the mini park. We'll have to see how that works out.
Meanwhile this mini park makes a pleasant diversion on our daily constitutional if not from the daily commute.
But we're among the few who enjoy it. We see the employed trudge down to the station in the morning and back in the evening without a sidelong glance at the charming mini park.
Too bad. The evergreens say one thing, the cherry trees another as time passes invisibly like the streetcars underground.
