In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at a Ukrainian ballerina, Jennie Ross Cobb, Ava Pellor, the thing about portraits, Select Subject enhanced and salvaging an iCloud disaster.

  • Márton Mónus photographed Ganna Muromtseva, a professional ballerina from Ukraine, who now dances at the Hungarian State Opera in Budapest while hoping to one day dance again in Kyiv. (The images are WebP not JPEG, BTW.)
  • John Yang describes The Life and Legacy of Native Photographer Jennie Ross Cobb in a !:30 video segment for the PBS NewsHour. Cobb, the first known female Native American photographer, captured personal images of her Cherokee community that have often gone unseen.
  • In From Whence We Came, former model turned photographer Ava Pellor reflects on "the great advantage of taking portrait photographs at home."
  • Kirk Tuck posts A Photo I Made Many Years Ago of a friend of his assistant. "Sometimes I post stuff to make a point about gear or technique but most of the time, at least with portraits, I'm posting stuff because I enjoy looking at it for a second, third or hundredth time," he writes. "For me that's the real value of doing the work."
  • Scott Kelby shows How to Get Next-Level Selections in Photoshop using the cloud rather than you computer to Select Subject in this one-minute video:

  • iCloud Disaster Update -- Resolved tells an interesting story. "Almost a week ago after upgrading to the latest macOS Ventura 13.3 beta, 5,900 photos from our iCloud disappeared," writes Josh Hill, CEO of Koingo Software. He details the three steps that caused the disaster before reporting that Apple was able to restore his data.

More to come! Meanwhile, here's a look five years back. And please support our efforts...
