In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at Gideon Mendel, Latin America, sports photography, trees in bloom, tulips and the BuzzFeed Era.

  • In Fire/Flood, Joanna Cresswell interviews South African photographer Gideon Mendel about his outdoor exhibit in London. "I wanted to find a way of talking about climate change which was confrontational but different to the conventional photojournalistic response -- I wanted to work in the space of activism and visual advocacy and I wanted people to be looking climate change directly in the eye," he says.
  • Associated Press photojournalist Ramon Espinosa in Havana curates The Week in Pictures in Latin America and the Caribbean.
  • LensRentals offers Tips for Photographing Outdoor Sports: A Comprehensive Guide. "Whether you're a seasoned professional or an enthusiastic amateur, sports photography offers endless opportunities to explore new techniques, challenge your skills and create breathtaking images that convey the intensity and drama of the game," the editors write.
  • Jasenka Grujin presents 19 Magical Photos of Blooming Trees. Well, trees in bloom. "If you live in the northern hemisphere, now it's the perfect time to look around carefully when taking a walk and enjoy all those beautiful blooming trees!" she writes.
  • Albert Dros has published his Complete Guide to Photographing Tulips in the Netherlands on Reddit. "As a professional photographer I've been photographing the tulips here for more than 10 years," he writes. "And every year so many people send me emails or messages with questions about the tulips." This should take care of that.
  • Ben Smith reflects on The End of the BuzzFeed Era in News. Many news organizations from NPR to DPReview are cutting back or closing down as social media turns toxic. Smith suggests "the new challenge is to build direct connections with an audience that's still overwhelmed by the decaying social Web and eager to find great journalism they can trust."

More to come! Meanwhile, here's a look back. And please support our efforts...
