In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at Harry Belafonte, Troy Williams, Omar Reda, ISO invariance and img2dataset.

  • The Guardian celebrates the life of Harry Belafonte in pictures. The singer, actor and activist has died at the age of 96.
  • In Village, Magali Duzant showcases Troy Williams's series featuring portraits of peoples he met in his New York neighborhood after the pandemic lockdowns. "I found that once I started doing this, there was such an intimate connection happening, even if it was for a fleeting moment," he says. "I felt that I was sharing something with them that was like a little miracle."
  • Grace Ebert presents The 'Flower Men' of Saudia Arabia photographed by Lebanese photographer Omar Reda. "The men of the group, which is said to descend from Ishmael, son of Abraham, fashion vibrant flower crowns made from marigolds, jasmine, herbs and other plants, wearing the handcrafted ornaments as symbols of pride and joy," she writes.
  • In Getting to Grips With ISO Invariance, Jason Row explores how to use ISO-invariant cameras. "Some modern cameras have the ability to obtain a similar image quality either by using a high ISO in the camera or by shooting at a low ISO and bumping the exposure in post-production," he writes. "This is the basics of ISO invariance, the camera is effectively ISO agnostic."
  • An AI Scraping Tool Is Overwhelming Websites With Traffic, according to an anonymous Slashdot reader. Img2dataset scrapes sites for images it resizes to train artificial intelligence image generators.
