In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at Kentucky Derby hats, Jacob Aue Sobol, photographers on covering the coronation, the Pecan Street Festival, a Sunday photography expedition, how cameras work and wedding film photography.

  • Beth Harris showcases Associate Press photographers' pictures of Kentucky Derby Hat Styles. "The tradition of wearing hats to the Derby began with its first running in 1875," she writes.
  • Arrivals and Departures America depicts Jacob Aue Sobol journey through all of the 50 United States. "Who can explain how it feels to look into someone else's eyes and realize that you are not alone -- that there is someone else who sees and feels the world just like you," he says. "I'm looking for that connection in another person."
  • In Life Behind a Lens at the Coronation, photographers Sarah Lee, David Levene, Antonio Olmos, Jill Mead, Graeme Robertson, Christian Sinibaldi, Gary Calton, Sean Smith reflect on "a day of rain, emotions and unity as King Charles III was crowned in Westminster Abbey."
  • Kirk Tuck presents a slide show of the Pecan Street Festival shot with his Leica SL and Carl Zeiss 28mm f2.8 Biogon ZM. Then he tries a few in Monochrome after a morning walk that reminds him of his stint as a paperboy. "You get a lot more done if you get up early," he learned.
  • Rad Drew and Kevin Raber go on a A Sunday Photography Expedition. "We left around 9 a.m. and didn't return until 9 p.m.," he writes. "Our day was filled with a sense of adventure and exploration as we checked out little Hoosier towns and country creeks."
  • Thom Hogan compares the Stubborn Versus Adaptive approaches to dealing with how cameras work. "Wanting something to work the way you expect it to work is only going to cause you frustration," he writes. You have to learn how it works and adapt your behavior.
  • Emma Grillo reports In the Digital Age, Wedding Film Photography Has a Resurgence (gift link). She profiles a handful of photographers using film cameras at weddings.

More to come! Meanwhile, here's a look four years back. And please support our efforts...
