In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at baby pictures, the Leica Freedom Train, Nikon Z 8 vs. D850, the Contax RTS II continued and Leica M/R lenses.

  • Antares Wells explains How to Take a Baby Picture Like a 19th-Century Photographer. You know, when exposures took 30 seconds. "To take a picture of a baby, photographers often enlisted the child's mother or caregiver to keep them still. This type of portrait later became known as the 'hidden mother'," she writes.
  • Feroz Khan tells the story of the Leica Freedom Train, Ernst Leitz II's initiative to save his Jewish employees during the Nazi regime. "Leitz never really wanted any credit for his actions, and only after the death of the last member of his family did the story of the Leica Freedom Train come to public knowledge," he writes.
  • In Nikon Z 8 vs. D850, Angela Nicholson compares the major features of the two cameras.
  • Mike Johnston continues his look back at The Contax RTS II, admiring its "thoughtful design, innovative tech and careful engineering." There will be a third part, he warns.
  • Lloyd Chambers is offering four Leica M/R Lenses for sale, an 18mm, 24mm, 28mm and 90mm.

More to come! Meanwhile, here's a look back. And please support our efforts...
