In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at Judith Joy Ross, Tom Wood, Julie Joubert, Poltava, Avedon 100, Charolette Drury, Harold Davis, an iPhone in Iceland, JC grads and the Z System.

  • In Finding Pain and Nobility in Everyday Americans (gift article), Arthur Lubow interviews Judith Joy Ross at the Philadelphia Museum of Art on the occasion of her retrospective.
  • In Merry Across the Mersey, Pejman Faratin showcases Tom Wood's images of Liverpool where he was known affectionately as the 'photie man.' His work is on exhibit at the Walker Art Gallery there until Jan. 7, 2024.
  • Magali Duzant highlights MIDO, Julie Joubert's photo project using various formats that follow Ahmed, a immigrant to Paris as he finds his way. "In her choice of a responsive form of image making, Joubert has allowed photography to do what it does best," she writes. "Capture in glimpses, both big and small, all the fantasies, quiet moments and harsh realities that make up a life."
  • Viktoria Sorochinski's series Poltava captures the Ukranian city's underground scene. "This place is full of mystery, almost as if it had a consciousness of its own," she says. "It speaks to you and it attracts unusual people into its 'web'."
  • Gagosian gallery in Chelsea is marking the centenary of Richard Avedon's birth with the exhibit Avedon 100, which represents six decades of his work.
  • In A Place to Land, Heidi Vople joins a portfolio review session for ICP's Portfolio Day last week to meet former Olympic athlete Charolette Drury and discuss her project photographing young gymnasts in black-and-white.
  • In Artfully Random, Harold Davis has "stumbled into a new series of flower images."
  • Dave Williams is still playing with his iPhone in Iceland. And a Platypod rig. Not to mention a Peak Design Mobile Creator Kit. Oh, and he used his Apple Watch to fire the iPhone remotely.
  • Derrick Story shares his love of Junior College Graduations, one of which he just covered as a credentialed photographer. "These are people we need in society," he writes. "And not only do they graduate with the technical skills required for their career, they are disciplined and are willing to exert the effort required for success."
  • In The Future of the Z System Redux, Thom Hogan admits, "I wish I knew." But he posits some intriguing guesses.

More to come! Meanwhile, here's a look five years back. And please support our efforts...
