In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at cheese rolling, magnificent libraries, Generative Fill spaghetti, manuals, Ireland and Lynsey Addario.
- Alan Taylor presents 15 photos of The 2023 Cooper's Hill Cheese-Rolling Race. "Participants chase a nine-pound wheel of Double Gloucester cheese down an extremely steep and uneven hill -- with no police or paramedics on site this year," he writes. "The winner of the race gets to take home the cheese."
- Grace Ebert shares a set of images from Temples of Books, a photo book of library interiors published by Gestalten. "From the exuberant Manueline style of Real Gabinete Portugues de Leitura in Rio de Janeiro to the modern concrete-and-wood structure of Phillips Exeter Academy Library, the volume encompasses a vast range of aesthetics and eras across more than 40 physical and virtual locations on six continents," she writes. Makes you feel smart just looking at the pictures.
- No less than the eminent Russell Preston Brown (Wait, There's More) demonstrates the effect of a selection on what Generative Fill does in this amusing 2:44 clip:
- In Do You Have to Read the Manual? Thom Hogan sympathizes and suggests an alternative.
- Joe McNally is planning An Irish Adventure with Tamara Lackey next year. Meanwhile he shares a few of his favorite images of the Emerald Isle.
- Lynsey Addario offered two quick lesson in her Commencement Speech to SVA's Class of 2023. One about risk and the other about success. "I believe some of the most powerful art comes from our darkest, most vulnerable moments," she said. "So use your failures to empower yourself. Nothing great comes easy."
More to come! Meanwhile, here's a look back. And please support our efforts...
