In a neighborhood overrun with Priuses, Telsas, Rivians and Polestars, it's nostalgic to run across a big old forklift that can move 5,400 lbs. with a stick shift. There's an undeniable beauty to the beast.

So we lined up a few shots of the one we found near Triangle Park the other day, enjoying the oversized tires, the exposed wiring harness, the open cab and the rust and wear of a machine that has been the heavy lifting for a few years.

It's not a stretch to say we identified with the thing.

We're both old equipment still doing the job, you might say, with time-worn technology that, with a little maintenance, is as reliable as it ever was. Which is to say steady as a rock.

So this is not a John Henry story. We're not pitting the fibers of our heart and ether of our soul against the hot spark plugs and viscous fluids of a machine.

No, we're identifying with it.

Neither of us need to recharge. Neither of us has a battery that, when it goes, condemns us to the scrap heap.

And both of us seem to be able to run all night.

So there we were, circling the old war horse after the crew had left for the day and admiring its strength.

And we imagine it looked back at us with its headlights and its arms folded thinking we should knock off early and get a beer.
