In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at the Earth Photo shortlist, wildfire haze, kelp forests, Maansi Srivastava, AI retouching tools, Andrew Molitor and VisionOS.

  • The 2023 Earth Photo Shortlist has been announced, comprising 128 photos and videos by 56 photographers and filmmakers from 1,400 entries.
  • The Associated Press presents images of the Wildfire Haze enveloping the eastern U.S.
  • Kate Mothes showcases the Undulating Kelp Forests captured by Santa Barbara photographer Douglas Klug. "I love shooting the kelp forests because it lets me highlight one of nature's most important resources," he says.
  • Suzanne Sease features Roots Hanging From the Banyan Tree, the personal project of Maansi Srivastava. "Searching for my identity as an Indian American woman became intertwined with the struggle to ground myself after losing my grandmother to Covid-19," Srivastava writes.
  • Zach Sutton explores How AI Tools Are Making Retouching Easier Than Ever. In addition to Photoshop and Lightroom, he looks at Retouch4Me Tools.
  • Andrew Molitor is having A Crisis of Faith thinking about "ways might we arrange pictures and other materials to 'say something' as specifically as possible." He notes, "Certainly nobody likes the modern photo book except people who make modern photo books."
  • John Gruber reports his First Impressions of Vision Pro and VisionOS after a 30-minute guided tour. "It was a very fast 30 minutes and the experience was, in a word, immersive," he writes. "I'd pay good money just to run through the exact same 30 minutes again." It gave him plenty to think about.

More to come! Meanwhile, here's a look back. And please support our efforts...
