In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at OpenWalls Arles, Rian Dundon, the Orobie Alps, iPhone monochromes, Ventura printing presets, ON1 AI Photo Organizer, the Instant Pot lesson for camera makers and Adorama open box deals.
- The single image winners of OpenWalls Arles have been announced. "For the fourth edition of the award, 50 winning single images and two series respond to the theme of 'Truth'," the organizers noted. "As we reflect on the past two years, we have to consider the extent to which our individual realities have changed. The camera has a unique ability to capture fleeting moments that otherwise would be gone forever, the image acting as a relic of the past."
- In Explosive Photos of Portland Amid the 2020 George Floyd Protests, Mark Murrmann presents Rian Dundon's images from 100 days documenting that summer's street battles. Dundon used a point-and-shoot digicam to remain unobtrusive. The University of Oregon Press has published the images in Protest City.
- Luciano Lavadini's photos accompany Giuseppe Nucci's story about moving livestock for the summer to higher ground in The Orobie Alps.
- In A Comparison of B&W iPhone Pictures to the Pentax Monochrome dSLR, Derrick Story follows up on his comparison shots. "But when it comes down to the photos themselves, it’s hard not to love the iPhone images," he writes.
- Tracy Valleau explains How to Get Print Settings in Ventura to Work Correctly with PrintTool but the lesson on using presets applies otherwise, too. "What I discovered is that it was mandatory for me to use both JOB and CUSTOM to get them to recall correctly," Valleau writes.
- ON1 has released its AI Photo Organizer with automatic keyword generation. "ON1 Photo Keyword AI can also detect faces, estimate age and gender, determine location using GPS metadata and classify photos based on photographic traits such as key, contrast, vividness, focal length and predominant color," the company said.
- Mike Johnston finds the Instant Pot predicament a lot like the camera industry predicament. And wonders why business experts are so bad at handling downturns. "The way I look at it, actually, humanity as a whole had better get a whole lot better at dealing with the downs part of ups and downs and quick," he writes.
- Adorama is offering Open Box Deals on Photography on like-new equipment, including cameras, lenses, accessories and lighting equipment.
