In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at diversity, chronic illness, transgender portraits and National Geographic.

  • In Moon: Celebrating Diversity and Equality in Photography, Sarah Gilbert presents images from Makers' Yard and the nonprofit Women Photograph exhibited at the Photo Frome festival in Somerset.
  • In 'My Body Is a Clock': The Private Life of Chronic Care (gift link), Sara J. Winston illustrates her chronic illness with photographs. "Every 28 days, I point the camera toward myself to document my illness and care," she writes. "I have used my time as a patient in the infusion suite, a place where I sometimes feel powerless, to reclaim my autonomy as an artist and photographer."
  • Suzanne Sease features the personal project of Brian Kuhlmann making Transgender Portraits. "Before any shutter is clicked, I listen to their stories. We meet, we talk and get to know each other," he says. "What strikes me the most about their stories is the level of abuse simply for being who they are -- everything from being disowned, being forced to live on the street, sexual abuse and even broken bones from assault."
  • Paul Farhi reports National Geographic Lays Off Its Last Staff Writers. "Departing staffers said the magazine has curtailed photo contracts that enabled photographers to spend months in the field producing the publication's iconic images," he writes.

More to come! Meanwhile, here's a look back. And please support our efforts...
