In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at the Fourth, white peonies, composition mistakes, Photoshop's Generative Fill, Z system telephotos, high-magnification photography, July opportunities and arts education.
- The Guardian presents images from the Fourth of July celebrations yesterday.
- Harold Davis has been photographing some White Peonies. "Part of the idea of photographing this flower on the light box is to let the colors of the flowers I have arranged under the petals be refracted up into the image," he writes.
- Jason Row lists Five Typical Composition Mistakes. "The key to good composition is to lead the viewer's eye through the image and to the subject," he writes.
- Derrick Story calls Photoshop's Generative Fill AI for the Rest of Us. "I still felt like a photographer, an artist, a technician," he writes after using the new feature. "And now instead of having just a crescent wrench and a tire jack, I had a compressor-powered socket wrench with a hydraulic lift."
- In Why I Love the 400mm f2.8 TC VR S, Thom Hogan explains why it was worth it to him to acquire this $14,000 lens. He has a $3,900 option for you, too. "Z System users are living in a world of excellent options for telephoto choice," he writes.
- In Sensor Pitches for High-Magnification Photography, Jim Kasson plans to explore 3:1 and 10:1 magnifications with a Zeiss S Planar 50mm f1.6 lens.
- Colossal lists a few July 2023 Opportunities for photographers.
- Caitlin Shamberg reports on a discussion at the Getty about The Power of Arts Education and how California's Prop. 28 will fund arts education in its schools. "Every single one of us is entitled to an optimistic future," said actor and educatorAhmed Best at the event attended by over 400 educators. "And to build that optimistic future, we have to be allowed to dream. We have to be allowed to imagine. And those dreams and that imagination is cultivated through an arts education."
