In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at Wimbledon, the circus, McGwuire, effort, AI, toy photography, a $13,000 contract, Z 6/7 firmware updates and The Photography Show.

  • Guardian photographer Sarah Lee visits the All England Club for an inside peek at Wimbledon 2023. "Everyone working at the tournament has a uniform of some sort even the photographers," she writes.
  • The U.K.'s Circus Extreme has to develop a new act: balancing increasing costs with show quality and affordability. Jeff Moore went to the circus and returned with a slide show featuring some of the 30 performers and 70 employees.
  • In A Cover Story, Without a Word Spoken, Joe McNally recalls the fever of Mark McGwire's home run chase." He was assigned to cover McGwire to the NYT's Sunday Magazine. "I bounced from B&W to color transparency to color neg as the roof closed and darkness, along with air conditioning, ensued." he writes.
  • In How Much Effort Does It Take?, Thom Hogan asks. "Today's topic is simple: you're out on a photography session; how much effort does it take to get a great image?" It, uh, depends. Of course it does.
  • Adobe's Chief Trust Officer Dana Rao will speak today as a witness at the U.S. Senate Judiciary Subcommittee Hearing on AI and Intellectual Property/Copyright. Meanwhile the Content Authenticity Initiative is providing an update today to help detect whether content was created or edited by AI.
  • Jesse Feyereisen encourages you to Unleash Your Imagination With Toy Photography. "I fell in love with the creativity and challenge of bringing toys and scale models to life in a single frame," he writes, when he interrupted a product photography session by adding an action figure to the scene.
  • Bryan Sheffield negotiates a $13,000 contract for Retail Store & Product Images for an Athletic Apparel Brand. "The client was very complimentary of the photographer's portfolio and had mentioned on a call that they had wanted to work with the photographer for some time," he writes. "The saturated market (unfortunately) put downward pressure on the photographer's fees."
  • Nikon has released v3.60 firmware updates for the Z 6 and Z 7.
  • The Photography Show presented by AIPAD will return to the Park Avenue Armory April 25 to 28, 2024 for its 43rd edition. "AIPAD as an organization has evolved post-Covid with a renewed sense of optimism and vitality and a burgeoning membership of young galleries offering new perspectives on the medium," said Lydia Melamed Johnson, AIPAD executive director. The most important historic and cutting-edge photography will be on view, creating incredible juxtapositions and conversations, as photography continues to push the boundaries of the visual arts." Applications to exhibit are now open.

More to come! Meanwhile, here's a look five years back. And please support our efforts...
