In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at Women's World Cup highlights, Ukrainian combat medics, Antonio Denti, affordable new cameras and Julia Scully.

  • In Women's World Cup Highlights, the Associated Press features images from the end of the group stage of the tournament.
  • Photojournalist Jelle Krings spends a day with Ukrainian Combat Medics who evacuate two injured soldiers from the Avdiivka frontline in Donbas for emergency treatment.
  • Nightfall by the Sea, shot on an iPhone 13 Pro, is Reuters cameraman Antonio Denti's best phone picture. He took the photo of his family when visiting his parents, who live in Sicily. "In the second world war, Germans used this area as a military outpost, but for me it's where I grew up, where I learned to both love and fear the sea," he says.
  • Kirk Tuck finds A Decent New Camera for under $2,000. And a "workable" one under $500, also new. "Budget needn't be an impediment to taking great photographs," he writes. "It never has been."
  • We note the passing of Julia Scully (gift link) who edited Modern Photography magazine for 20 years, focusing on the art of photography by interviewing photographers and writing a column describing their work.

More to come! Meanwhile, here's a look back. And please support our efforts...
