In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at Lahaina, Lewis Miller, old family photos, Rodinal and paying assistants.

  • Alan Taylor presents 21 photos of Lahaina, After the Fire. "More than 1,000 people remain missing as teams continue to search house to house and fire crews work to contain the last of the fires," he reports.
  • Kate Mothes features the Elaborate Flower Arrangements of Lewis Miller, who also photographs them. "He delights in setting the scene for unexpected encounters and often collaborates with local businesses, events and other artists, like in a series of cascading displays around artist Scott Froschauer's reimagined road signs for L.E.A.F. Flower Show," she writes.
  • In What to Do With All of Those Old Family Photos, Derrick Story suggests gang scanning them after taking a smartphone photo of the captions on the back.
  • In The Trouble With Rodinal, Mike Johnston lets his cranky side out, taking on not just Rodinal but HC-110B* as well. "Most people who use Rodinal end up fighting it and then wondering why the craft of photography seems to be so hard," he writes.
  • Nick Nightingdale asks, What Do You Pay Your Assistants? He gets answers with hourly and day rates in various cities.

More to come! Meanwhile, here's a look back. And please support our efforts...
